Community
When materials and construction allow for maintenance and re-use they can be cared for. When building design is ’sticky’, as in most modern construction, it is much harder. Maintenance of fabric and flexibility of use are possible with long-life and loose fit construction.
Design for maintenance, design for adaptability, design for deconstruction is central to creating a circular economy and regenerative society.
Interdependence can be reached by working from historic dependence, through our current independence, to create a society where communities feel comfortable relying on one another. This is essential if we are to move to a society which can reach out to those around us, rather than relying on consumerism to support our independent, but isolated lives.
Our response to our existing built environment can be compared to the common stress responses in people: flight, freeze, and fight. There has to be positive and reliable foundations to be able to thrive and make a good impact on people and the planet.
